The best Gorgias alternatives for ecommerce support

Gorgias bills AI resolutions on top of your ticket plan. Compare HelpYap, Tidio, Zendesk, and Crisp for merchants who want that fixed.

Gorgias earns its reputation as the Shopify helpdesk. It pulls order data straight into the conversation, its AI Agent handles the where-is-my-order and returns traffic that fills a DTC inbox, and seats are unlimited at every tier, which is rare in this category. The reason merchants go looking for a Gorgias alternative is usually not that the product is bad. It is the bill: ticket-volume pricing plus a per-resolution AI fee that, by Gorgias's own design, stacks on top of the ticket count rather than replacing it. This post covers what Gorgias does well, what the pricing actually costs at real volume, and four alternatives worth evaluating, including our own product.

One disclosure up front: HelpYap is our product, and it is one of the four alternatives below. We have tried to describe Gorgias and the others as fairly as we describe ourselves, because ecommerce merchants comparison-shop harder than almost anyone.

Why do ecommerce merchants look for a Gorgias alternative?

The most common complaint is double billing: Gorgias plans are metered by ticket volume, and AI-resolved conversations still count against that same ticket allotment. So a merchant pays for the plan tier to cover volume, then pays again per AI resolution, and the AI doing more work never reduces the ticket count it consumes.

The second complaint is scope. Gorgias is built for ecommerce and only ecommerce, by design. If a brand runs support across a marketplace presence, a SaaS add-on product, or channels beyond the Shopify-adjacent set, the fit gets worse fast. Neither of these is a secret. Gorgias is transparent about both the AI Agent fee and the ticket-based structure on its own pricing page. They are simply trade-offs some merchants decide not to accept.

What does Gorgias do well?

Gorgias deserves credit before the pricing critique. Live order data inside the conversation means an agent, or the AI, can see order status, shipment tracking, and return eligibility without leaving the ticket. Automation for where-is-my-order questions, cancellations, and returns is purpose-built for the exact volume that dominates a DTC inbox, and the Shopify (and Shopify Plus) integration is deeper than any general-purpose helpdesk will offer out of the box.

Unlimited seats at every tier is also a genuine advantage over seat-priced competitors, HelpYap included. A ten-person seasonal support team on Gorgias Basic pays the same $60 a month as a two-person team on the same plan. That is a real structural difference, not a marketing line, and it is worth weighing against the ticket-metering complaint below rather than dismissing.

How much does Gorgias actually cost?

Gorgias prices by monthly ticket volume with unlimited seats included: Starter is $10 per month for 50 tickets, Basic is $60 per month for 300 tickets, and Pro is $360 per month for 2,000 tickets. The AI Agent is a separate line: $1.00 per resolved conversation on monthly billing, or $0.90 per resolution if you commit annually.

Here is where the double-billing complaint comes from, concretely. A merchant on Basic (300 tickets, $60 a month) who gets 200 of those tickets resolved by the AI Agent pays $60 for the plan, plus 200 times $1.00 for the AI resolutions, for $260 that month. The 200 AI-resolved tickets also count toward the 300-ticket allotment, so if human agents handle another 150 tickets in the same month, the merchant has blown through the plan and needs to upgrade to Pro on top of the AI fee. Reviewers and merchants report exactly this pattern: the AI doing its job well is what triggers the plan upgrade, because resolved-by-AI still means ticket-consumed.

What should you look for in a Gorgias alternative?

Four questions narrow the field faster than a feature checklist:

  • Does AI volume consume a separate quota from the plan, or the same one? If AI resolutions and ticket allotment are the same bucket, growing AI usage forces plan upgrades regardless of how well the AI performs.
  • How is the AI billed? Per resolution (Gorgias, Help Scout), in prepaid credits (Crisp, Tidio's Lyro), per automated resolution at an unpublished rate (Zendesk), or included in the seat (HelpYap).
  • Does it need a native Shopify order-lookup connector, or can a webhook do the job? A built-in connector is faster to set up. A generic webhook or API integration takes engineering time but works with any commerce platform, not just Shopify.
  • Are seats metered or unlimited? Unlimited seats favor larger or seasonal teams; per-seat pricing favors small teams that would otherwise pay for headroom they do not use.

Is HelpYap a good Gorgias alternative for ecommerce?

HelpYap's structural difference from Gorgias is the one that matters most for the double-billing complaint: AI conversations are included in the seat price, not billed per resolution and not deducted from a separate ticket count. Starter is $19 per seat per month with 300 AI conversations included, Pro is $49 per seat with 1,000, and Business is $89 per seat with 2,500. There is no line item anywhere on the invoice that goes up because the AI agent resolved more conversations this month.

For ecommerce specifically, HelpYap's social proof widget is a genuinely relevant bonus that Gorgias does not offer: a Stripe-verified sales popup that shows recent purchases on the storefront, available on Pro and Business. It is a small feature next to the core support platform, but it is the kind of thing an ecommerce buyer notices and a general helpdesk buyer never asks about.

Now the honest limitation, because merchants comparing Gorgias will check this immediately: HelpYap does not ship a native Shopify order-lookup connector the way Gorgias does. There is no out-of-the-box widget that pulls order status into the AI's context with zero setup. What HelpYap has instead is custom HTTPS webhook tools on Pro and Business plans, which let the AI call your own endpoint, a Shopify app, or middleware you stand up, to fetch order status, initiate a return, or check inventory live during a conversation. That is real capability, and it works with any commerce platform, not only Shopify, but it is a webhook you or a developer wire up, not a checkbox in settings. For a merchant who wants order lookups working in an afternoon with no engineering time, Gorgias's native integration is faster today. For a merchant who wants that capability without paying per AI resolution, or who runs commerce outside Shopify, the webhook tool is the trade. The full side-by-side, including the seats-versus-tickets math at different volumes, is not yet published as a dedicated compare page for Gorgias; the pricing page has the exact per-seat numbers in the meantime.

Is Tidio a good Gorgias alternative?

Tidio: the cheaper ecommerce-leaning entry point

Tidio is the other genuinely ecommerce-leaning option here, and it undercuts Gorgias on entry price for a working AI agent. The base plan is $24.17 per month billed annually, and the Lyro AI add-on starts at $32.50 per month for 50 AI conversations, with your first 50 conversations free on any account. Tidio's Shopify integration is a real strength, on par with what pulled merchants toward Gorgias in the first place.

The trade-off is the one covered in Tidio pricing explained: stacking the base plan, Lyro, and the Flows automation add-on adds up to two to three times the headline number once volume grows, and higher Lyro tiers beyond the published entry are not listed, so budgeting past 50 conversations requires a sales conversation. For a merchant testing whether AI support pays off before committing real budget, Tidio's low entry cost is hard to beat. For a merchant who already knows they need AI at real volume, the add-on stack needs to be priced out before signing, not after. Is Zendesk a good fit for merchants leaving Gorgias?

Zendesk: enterprise depth, unpublished AI pricing

Zendesk is the option for merchants who have outgrown a Shopify-specific helpdesk and need enterprise-grade routing, permissions, and a large app marketplace. Suite plans start at $55 per agent per month billed annually, with a ticketing-only Support plan from $19. That is per-agent pricing, the opposite of Gorgias's unlimited-seats model, so a growing seasonal team costs more on Zendesk as headcount rises.

Its AI is billed per automated resolution, and the rate itself is not published anywhere on Zendesk's pricing page; plans include small resolution allotments and the actual per-resolution cost requires a sales conversation. That opacity is a real drawback for budgeting, but Zendesk's routing and admin controls are deeper than anything else on this list, which matters once a support team crosses into double digits with shift coverage and escalation policies to manage. The full comparison is at HelpYap vs Zendesk.

Is Crisp a good fit for small ecommerce teams?

Crisp: flat workspace pricing, pooled AI credits

Crisp prices by workspace rather than by seat or ticket, which is a third pricing shape worth knowing about. Mini is $45 per month and includes 4 seats, Essentials is $95 per month and includes 10 seats, and extra seats beyond that are $10 each. AI conversations draw from a pooled credit allowance included in the plan rather than a per-resolution fee.

For a small ecommerce team of four to ten people that wants live chat, a shared inbox, and a knowledge base at one predictable flat price, Crisp is genuinely competitive on cost, and it avoids both the ticket-metering and per-resolution patterns that drive people away from Gorgias. The trade-off is depth: Crisp's ecommerce-specific tooling, order lookups, WISMO automation, and Shopify-native features, is shallower than what Gorgias built specifically for that use case. The full comparison is at HelpYap vs Crisp.

How should you choose between these?

Start with what is actually driving you to look. If the complaint is specifically the double-billing pattern, AI resolutions eating the same ticket quota you already pay for, HelpYap and Tidio both replace it with a different model: seat-included conversations on HelpYap, or a separate credit pool on Tidio, neither of which deducts from a ticket count.

If the complaint is that Gorgias only works for Shopify-flavored ecommerce and you need broader routing, permissions, or an app marketplace, Zendesk is the upgrade path, with the caveat that its AI pricing requires a sales call to pin down. If the complaint is simply that the bill is unpredictable and you want one flat number for a small team, Crisp's workspace pricing is the most boring, in a good way, option here.

  • Want AI included, not metered: HelpYap, from $19 per seat with 300 to 2,500 AI conversations included.
  • Want the cheapest working AI and deep Shopify integration: Tidio, from $24.17 a month plus Lyro from $32.50.
  • Want enterprise routing and are willing to negotiate AI pricing: Zendesk, from $55 per agent.
  • Want flat workspace pricing for a small team: Crisp, from $45 a month for 4 seats.
  • Want unlimited seats and the deepest native Shopify order tooling, and accept ticket metering: stay on Gorgias.
Whichever tool you shortlist, run the same math Gorgias's pricing invites you to run on it: take your actual monthly AI resolution count, multiply by the per-resolution fee if there is one, and add it to the base plan. Compare that total, not the headline price, against a seat-based or workspace-based alternative at the same volume.

The bottom line

Gorgias is a well-built, ecommerce-specific helpdesk with live order data and unlimited seats, and merchants who value the native Shopify depth over predictable AI pricing should stay. The reason others leave is specific and well documented: ticket-volume plans plus a per-resolution AI fee that draws from the same ticket count, meaning the AI resolving more conversations can trigger a plan upgrade rather than avoid one. HelpYap answers that directly with AI conversations included in the seat price and a social proof widget as an ecommerce-relevant extra, though it trades away Gorgias's zero-setup Shopify connector for custom webhook tools that take real configuration. Tidio, Zendesk, and Crisp each solve a different piece of the same complaint at a different price shape. The pricing pagehas HelpYap's exact per-seat numbers, and the 7-day trial needs no credit card, so the fastest way to compare is to run your real monthly conversation count through it directly.
